Laken Riley's brutal murder has been thrust at the center of the US immigration debate after the University of Georgia student became the latest victim of the 'migrant crime wave' sweeping the country.

The senseless February 22 killing has fueled calls for tougher border security by conservatives amid the ongoing crisis, which is on track to becoming the top issue in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

President Joe Biden is expected to address the issue of the border during his State of the Union address on Thursday evening – and potentially he has plenty to talk about.

Here, DailyMail.com catalogues a sample of the numerous violent crimes committed by undocumented migrants across the US in the past six months.

Some gained national attention, others simply made the local news but were no less significant for those affected. In some cases, the alleged perpetrators had been deported multiple times.

Ira Mehlman, the spokesman of Washington DC-based pressure group The Federation for American Immigration Reform told DailyMail.com that Riley's murder was 'an avoidable tragedy, precipitated by the actions of the federal government and sanctuary policies among local governments around the country'.

'We have gangs that have materialized – New York City is a prime example – committing crimes and attacking police officers,' he added.

'The interests of the American public are being sacrificed in pursuit of this administration's ideological goal of open borders. The dangers to the public are evident.'

February 27, Athens, Georgia. Murder

Riley's case made headlines last week after the University of Georgia nursing student was beaten to death by an undocumented immigrant while she was running in a forested area of Athens campus.

Her suspected killer has been identified as Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan national who entered the country illegally at El Paso, Texas, in September 2022.

Ibarra, 26, had been released from a detention center due to lack of space and went on to be arrested in Queens, New York, on August 31 last year.

He was charged with endangering a child, but let go before immigrations officials could file a request to keep him locked up.

The undocumented migrant had been living in Athens, but authorities believe he didn't know his alleged victim.

The Athens-Clarke County Coroner confirmed Riley died of blunt force trauma after Ibarra allegedly used an unknown object to batter her and disfigure her skull before dragging her body to a secluded area to conceal her.

He is charged with malice murder, felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another.

Mehlman told DailyMail.com: 'The alleged killer was caught coming into the country illegally. He was then paroled into the country. And parole is something that by law is only supposed to be used on a case by case basis where a compelling public interest needs to be served.

'Jose Ibarra was not a compelling interest to have here in the United States. Nevertheless, he was released and wound up in New York City where he was arrested for child endangerment.

'New York City, which is reeling under the weight of migrants and continues its sanctuary policy, simply then released a guy who had endangered a child and put him back on the streets.

'He eventually wound up in Athens, Georgia and Laken Riley paid the ultimate price for that.'

February 27, Langley Park, Maryland. Murder

Nilson Trejo-Granados, 25, - an illegal El Salvadorian migrant - was charged by the Prince George County Police Department with first and second-degree murder this week

Nilson Trejo-Granados, 25 - an illegal El Salvadorian migrant - was charged by the Prince George County Police Department with first and second-degree murder

Less than a week after Riley's slaying, illegal migrant Nilson Trejo-Granados was arrested and charged with the murder of a two-year-old boy in Maryland.

The 25-year-old from El Salvador is the fifth person seized in connection with the death of Jeremy Poou Caceres, who was caught in crossfire on February 8 after a gun battle broke out between two groups of men in a drug turf war in Langley Park, northeast of Washington DC.

The young boy had been out on a walk through the park with his mother when gunfire erupted.

The toddler's 17-year-old mother was also hit in the crossfire, but her injuries were not life-threatening. Investigators say the mother and child were not the intended targets.

The boy was taken to Children's National Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Trejo-Granados was charged by Prince George's County Police Department with first and second degree murder in the deadly shoot out.

Prior to the fatal encounter, Trejo-Granados, according to ICE and police records, had had several previous run-ins with the law.

The suspect already had a rap sheet for two theft charges in the state.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged an Immigration Detainer on March 1, 2023 after his arrest on those charges,

The local police department, however, refused to honor the detainer and subsequently released Trejo-Granados back into the public.

He was yet again arrested by the Montgomery County Police Department in September of 2023. He was charged with theft and attempting to obstruct and hindering, and ICE again tried to have him detained, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Both cases occurred after a DoJ immigration judge in Newark, New Jersey, ordered him to be removed from the United States in November 2022.

February 27, Kenner, Louisiana. Rape

Angel Matias Castellanos-Orellana, 19, was arrested on February 27 in Kenner, Louisiana, after he attempted to rob a man and stabbed him. Police soon realized he was also wanted in connection to the rape of a 14-year-old girl

Angel Matias Castellanos-Orellana, 19, was arrested on February 27 in Kenner, Louisiana, after he attempted to rob a man and stabbed him. Police soon realized he was also wanted in connection to the rape of a 14-year-old girl

Cops in Louisiana arrested illegal migrant Angel Matias Castellanos-Orellana after he went on the run while accused of raping a 14-year-old girl – 'causing 25 days of terror' to a local community.

The Honduran national was caught in Kenner – the location of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport – after he allegedly robbed and stabbed a man.

At the time of the armed robbery, police said that the male victim was getting out of his car when  Castellanos-Orellana approached him, demanded his property and proceeded to stab him in the back and face.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

The previous week, police said that a 14-year-old girl met the same suspect in the Susan Park neighborhood after the two connected on social media.

She then accused Castellanos-Orellana of holding a knife to her throat and raping her.

Authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest after the girl reported the incident to police.

He is charged with first-degree rape, armed robbery, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

Castellanos-Orellana allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in his back and face on the 2600 block of Phoenix Street in the city of Kenner

Before he was caught in the armed robbery, Castellanos-Orellana was still considered wanted by law enforcement.

Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said law enforcement struggle with migrants who are accused of crimes because of their lack of documents. Castellanos-Orellana used aliases, including the name Elven Locket.

'In a 25-day period this illegal alien caused terror in our community,' said Conley.

'We are glad he is off our streets. But will he be back? Will he have a new identity? What other crimes has he committed since he crossed out borders?'

February 25, Englewood, Florida. Rape

Illegal migrant Santo Felix Cruz-Ramos was arrested and remains in custody after a woman claimed he raped her at a motel in Englewood, Florida.

But the situation changed dramatically and the accused allegedly pushed her on to the bed and raped her without using a contraceptive. The woman rang 911 after the suspect fled.

Officers reviewed security footage showing Cruz-Ramos wearing a bright yellow jacket and talking to the woman, then following her back to her room. A short time later he is seen running from the room toward a stairwell.

Motel staff revealed the suspect was staying at the property and deputies found him in his room, where he denied any knowledge of the woman and claimed the person in the footage wasn't him.

He also said he was in the United States illegally. It is not reported where he is from originally.

Most of the heists were in Phoenix and the suburbs of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Gilbert and Peoria.

Arizona authorities received information from California law enforcement investigating the same group, which led to the arrests. The gang allegedly used technology to jam home surveillance cameras.

All three lived at the Roosevelt, now a migrant shelter in Midtown Manhattan. They were held at Passaic County Jail awaiting detention hearings.

February 8, New York City. Attempted murder

Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa, a 15-year-old Venezuelan migrant, was arrested and charged in early February after allegedly shooting at cops and wounding a Brazilian female tourist in Times Square while fleeing a robbery scene.

Police say the teen began firing at a female security guard who had asked him to produce a receipt for a coat he and two friends tried to steal from JD Sports Store on West 42nd Street and Broadway.

As the guard reached for the bag, a video shows the suspect reaching into his coat for a gun and shooting at her.

The bullet missed and hit Tatiele Riberio Lemos, a 38-year-old Brazilian tourist, who was waiting in line to buy a pair of sneakers.

He fled through Times Square, allegedly firing wildly two times at police who chased after him with no regard for the dense crowd of shoppers.

The teen has been charged as an adult with two counts of attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He is accused of firing wildly at police while trying to escape.

NYPD Deputy Chief of Detectives Jason Savino called him a 'very, very violent' suspect who recklessly fired a 'very large' .45 caliber handgun in a crowded area of New York City.

But the baby-faced alleged bandit, who was also wanted for armed robbery, looked more like a scared child crying for his mother when he was eventually nabbed by US Marshals in Yonkers after a nearly day-long manhunt.

During the half-mile chase through Times Square, police say the suspect fired twice at a pursuing officer before he was caught – and was pictured in tears being led away in handcuffs.

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said: 'In the middle of the busiest, most highly-trafficked part of this city, a criminal with a firearm decided to pull the trigger.'

Police said Rivas-Figueroa had been staying at a migrant shelter after arriving in New York in fall 2023. They said the alleged shooter may have a family connection to Yonkers, but it was still unclear.

In interviews with local news station Riberio, who was visiting NYC with her mother-in-law, said she didn't know she was injured until she was taken into a storage room and had a chance to look at her leg.

Witnesses tied her shirt around her leg as makeshift tourniquet as staff and other shoppers huddled in the store's back room.

Riberio was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in a stable condition and needed 13 stitches to the wound.

At just 15, Rivas Figueroa is already also wanted in two other crimes – an armed robbery in the Bronx from January 27 and another shooting in Midtown.

Chief of Patrol John Chell said police also identified the two other teen boys who are persons of interest, aged 15 and 16. They have not been named.

February 5, New York City. Robbery

Seven migrants were arrested in an NYPD raid in the Bronx, New York, accused of being part of a crew with a city-wide operation of street cellphone robberies.

NYPD videos show suspects working in pairs on mopeds snatching the devices plus wallets and bags from unsuspecting victims. The phones were then hacked to obtain access to banking apps.

Authorities believe those arrested are responsible for 62 robberies across the city. The raid was on the apartment of alleged ringleader Victor Parra, who is still at large.

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said: 'In recent months a wave of migrant crime has washed over our city. But by no means do the individuals committing these crimes represent the vast number of people coming to New York for a better life. But they are… making our city less safe.'

January 27, New York City. Assaulting police

A mob of illegal migrants from Venezuela drew widespread attention in January after they were accused of kicking and beating two NYPD officers in Times Square as the cops were trying to take a person into custody.

The attack was caught on video and gained national notoriety.

Eight have so far been charged and at least two of them are members of a notorious Venezuelan street gang called Tren de Aragua, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Many have existing rap sheets.

The brutal attack occurred around 8:30pm when officers attempted to disperse a disorderly group in front of 220 West 42 Street.

According to the NYPD, the migrants then started to attack the officers, kicking them in the head and body while the two officers tried to pin down one of the other men, tearing off his sweatshirt.

At around 10:44pm that night, four of them – Darwin Andres Gomez Izquiel, 19, Kelvin Servat Arocha, 19, Juarez Wilson, 21, and Yorman Reveron, 24 – were arrested.

They were all charged with assault on a police officer, gang assault, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct but were released without monetary bail.

Gomez Izquiel, Servat Arocha, Juarez, and Reveron are believed to have given fake names to a church-affiliated nonprofit group that helps migrants get rides out of the city, law enforcement sources told the Post.

Gomez Izquiel – accused of grabbing one officer and kicking another – was released without bail, but rearrested two weeks later over a violent robbery at a Macy's store in Queens. He had been in the United States for six months and is now back in jail.

Suspect Jhoan Boada, 22, was also released after being charged and was seen flipping the bird at the press waiting outside court.

Yohenry Brito, 24, who is accused of being the ringleader of the attack, was released from custody charged with second-degree assault after the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brooklyn posted his $15,000 bail.

Brito was already known to police over a series of past offences, including charges of petty larceny for stealing $275 worth of goods from Bergdorf Goodman in October and $139 of clothing from Macy’s.

New York Police Benevolent Fund president Patrick Hendry said before Brito was let out: 'It's mind boggling that anyone would want to try to release this dangerous individual who was the main ringleader out of this whole gang assault on our police officers.

'He was arrested multiple times. What makes anybody think that he's going to behave on the streets of the city of New York?'

January 23, Chicago, Illinois. Theft

Six migrants from Venezuela and Chile were charged with stealing more than $11,000 of goods in two raids on one day at a Macy's store in Oakbrook, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

Four of the alleged thieves, who included two women, grabbed $927 of clothing from the Tommy Hilfiger section and allegedly went to a fitting room where the females put them on and tried to leave.

Marquez also removed a knife and the officer then noticed a handle under the man's clothing. After calling for backup, the cop drew his gun. Marquez was searched and a machete was found.

According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he entered the United States through El Paso, Texas, on an unknown date but was arrested on August 21, 2022. The suspect was released from custody 'due to lack of detention capacity'.

Mexican national Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez, 45, has been deported nine times yet was arrested in Texas in September for murder and aggravated assault on a police officer

An undocumented Mexican who has been deported nine times fired on police after killing another man outside a liquor store in Dallas, Texas, say authorities – hitting one of the officers in his bulletproof vest in a subsequent chase.

Video reveals a man identified as Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez, 45, shooting roommate Ruperto Mondragon Salgado, 60, as the victim sat in his pick-up truck around 1.25pm.

Passing police officers Derek Williams and Christopher Mazin veered into a nearby parking lot, dashed from their vehicle and drew their weapons.

Authorities say Zavala Lopez fired at them several times as he sped away in his vehicle – hitting their patrol car.

The cops gave chase in their cruiser, leading to the gunman doing a sudden U-turn and firing off two more shots.

'Not only did he fire twice… he used two hands to shoot. So that means he was determined to strike, which he did, hitting one of our officers,' said Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata.

Zavala Lopez was later arrested in a barn at a private home in the city of Lewisville.

He was charged with murder, aggravated assault and four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Honduran national Carlos Corrales-Ramirez, 20, already had a warrant out for his arrest in Maryland when he was remanded and charged with fatally stabbing a man in Troy, New York in September

Undocumented Carlos Corrales-Ramirez was arrested for the fatal frenzied stabbing of a man in Troy, New York – while he was already wanted for allegedly knifing another man in Maryland the previous February.

The 20-year-old Honduran national was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Jairo Hernandez-Sanchez, 28, 'several times in the chest, torso, and arm area with a large knife', according to the felony complaint.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment at Rensselaer County Court on September 12.

Prosecutors revealed Corrales-Ramirez was previously arrested by US Customs and Border Protection near Champlain, New York, close to the border with Canada on March 16, for not having documentation.

The agency publicly identified him as being in the country illegally in a social media post.

It was then that they learned Corrales-Ramirez had a warrant out for his arrest in relation to the knifing in Maryland.

Corrales-Ramirez was taken into custody at Clinton County Jail where he was held for 90 days while awaiting extradition to the state.

He was eventually released after authorities failed to obtain a warrant to extradite him.

Boston's progressive 'sanctuary city' laws allowed Pierre Lucard Emile, 31, a Haitian man who came to America illegally, to be set free despite being arrested for rape and indecent assault of a developmentally disabled person

An illegal migrant from Haiti was arrested over the rape and sexual battery of a disabled person – but was released despite a plea from ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) unit in Boston for him to be detained.

Pierre Lucard Emile, 31, entered the United States at Brownsville, Texas, in December, 2022 where he was deemed inadmissible and ordered to appear before a Department of Justice's Office of Immigration Review in Boston.

Nine months later in September last year he was seized over the rape and sexual battery of a 'developmentally disabled person' by Boston PD in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

ICE lodged an immigration detainer to keep him in custody but Dorchester municipal court let him go on November 8 with an electronic monitoring device.

Emile was finally arrested again on January 9, 2024, when ICE's ERO unit nabbed him in Dorchester. He was put in ICE custody pending an immigration hearing – with his criminal charges still pending.
