Editorial Reviews

Review

“With a childhood curiosity and sense of wonder, Susi Gott Séguret opens our eyes to enduring truths amidst a world too often overcome with clatter and a loss of harmony with nature and community.”
Dr. Doug Orr, President Emeritus, Warren Wilson College and co-author of Wayfaring Strangers

“In
Child of the Woods, Susi Gott Séguret transports the reader into the southern Appalachian culture as only one who has lived it and loved it could do.  Her prose stimulates the senses as surely as huckleberry jam on a biscuit warm from the wood-fired oven on a frosty morning.”
Dr. Alan Haney, Dean Emeritus, College of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and author of Backyard Stories, Following Old Trails, Jewels of Nature, and Laughing in the Wilderness

“A must-read for anyone wanting to unlock the clues of passage into what humans need to become more actualized human beings and fulfill their potential.”
Eustace Conway, Mountain Men, Turtle Island visionary

“[A]n incomparable reflection of growing up in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee during the early 1960s that is without peer for color, atmosphere, humor, music and the qualities that show how rich life can be.”
Paul Peabody, Grammy-winning First Violinist, New York City Ballet

“I laughed, I cried, and by the end I was uplifted. I will be reading it again. It is just that kind of book.”
Sheila Kay Adams, NC Heritage Award winner and author of My Old True Love

“The clarity of Susi Gott Séguret’s imagery evokes a time I fear we won't see again. She has captured what may be the final moments of an Appalachian lifestyle that is being replaced by the distractions and demands of modernity.”
Wilson Roberts, author of All that Endures and The Serpent and the Hummingbird

“Séguret’s voice is authentic and pure, the redemptive force of her imagination seizes on cowpies and cliffsides, caves and foxes and banjo chords that lift you, for a moment, from the chaos and clutter of our current lives, into a more idyllic place.”
Keith Flynn, author of Colony Collapse Disorder and editor of The Asheville Poetry Review

“From these pages emerge the wonder, the joy, the gratitude of living in a sacred place…nothing surpasses the beauty of the world God gave us.”
Locke Harvey, mother of four and fellow wanderer

This book is wonderful. It tells unique stories of true experiences and the essence of a childhood free to live and learn about life in the natural setting of the rural southern Appalachian Mountains. Reminds me so much of my own childhood as I roamed the woods near my home.

Sweet book. My family enjoyed the story about running barefoot all the time. 😊

I bought Susi Gott Seguret's "Child of the Woods" as part of my support for my long-tenured friend, Susi. I've already loaned my spare copy to select family members, all of whom have thoroughly enjoyed it, and Susi's words have inspired them to TALK about what they've read--a bit of a rarity for these particular relatives. As an English teacher, I take special note of the seemingly rare pieces of writing that inspire people to talk about their reading experiences. I've admired and respected Susi for 4+ decades, and her "Child of the Woods" is one of many reminders of the why's of that admiration and respect. For those of you who are still looking forward to reading this beautiful book, I offer one of my favorite excerpts: "(At school) I did a lot of dreaming. Out the window of my classroom...was a dirt sled road that wound around the mountainside. Time after time I followed that road to escape the (monotony of school), winding in and out of the trees where no one could find me anymore. I built hiding spots from dead tree limbs, weatherized with earth and leaves. I wanted to survive any weather. I gathered roots and berries from the wood, and dried them to last me through the snows. I made friends with animals, and some of them would snuggle in with me for added warmth when it became extra cold without. There was no need for school because I already knew how to survive. And this is the lesson we were all learning: survival. Survival of the fittest. I would be the fittest." For on-going inspiration, Susi--thank you.

Heartfelt memories of growing up in the North Carolina Mountains.

I enjoyed this book even more than I expected to. I thought it was going to be a reminiscent of a childhood spent in the woods, but right from the beginning it reminded me of Laura Ingalls Wilder's acclaimed autobiographies, which I absolutely devoured as a child! Susi Gott Séguret's Child of the Woods is very entertaining and poetic. I felt like it was Little House on the Prairie for adults. She describes an Appalachian upbringing in a pragmatic style, never missing a detail and invoking all five senses in doing so.

I read this book in one sitting. I felt like I was in the fields with Susi and her brother. I could feel the wind and sun on my face and taste the food they enjoyed at lunch. Treat yourself to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exquisite memoir of an unusual childhood
Reviewed in Germany on February 2, 2020
Susi Gott Séguret grew up in the Appalachian woods of Western North Carolina and in her memoir, Child of the Woods: An Appalachian Odyssey, she revisits a childhood most rare. The chapters are short, engaging, often funny, and highly readable. Susi spent much of her adult life living in France and establishing herself in a pair of very different fields: she is a successful chef (and culinary educator and writer) and also a very talented fiddler and singer who specializes in bluegrass and the old-timey music from the very hills she grew up in. Reading her memoir beautifully describes the adventurous life of a child who has grown up to be a true Renaissance woman. Highly recommended!
